Membership fees

English UK membership fees and other subscriptions: how they work

Our membership fee has two components: a flat rate Basic Subscription (which includes the Student Emergency Support Fund contribution), and a Supplementary Subscription which is based on the size of the member's English language business, in student weeks or an equivalent. You can download a Student Weeks calculation example at the bottom of this page.

We also handle invoicing for members'  annual British Council Accreditation UK fee, and, if they have signed up for this, the Copyright Licensing Agency fee. Both are at discounted rates.

English UK's financial year runs from 1 January to 31 December. Rates of subscription are agreed annually by the membership in the autumn either at a General Meeting or by postal ballot.

Private and public sector members are invoiced and make payments in slightly different ways.

Private centre subscriptions

Invoices for the Basic Subscription are sent out in January/February and invoices for the Supplementary Subscription are sent out in June/July.

Private sector members must pay these by direct debit. The Basic Subscription element is taken in 5 instalments from March through to July and Supplementary Subscriptions, British Council and CLA fees from August through to December.

State sector subscriptions

For state sector members, all English UK subscription invoices are issued in the first quarter of the year and Accreditation Scheme fees in the second quarter.

Basic Subscriptions: reduced rates for very small member centres

The majority of individual member centres pay the same flat rate Basic Subscription, which is £1,410.

However, there are two reduced rates for very small centres which have declared fewer than 250 or 500 student weeks, or those which have group membership of English UK (see the Group section below for more detail).

Supplementary Subscriptions – how much you will pay

The size of this payment for each member centre is decided by the number of student weeks in the previous year for private sector members, or a proxy measure based on teacher hours and a class size conversion factor for international students taking English courses during the previous academic year for state sector members.

One student week is calculated as one student taking ten or more hours of tuition in one week: download an example at the end of this page.

Group Subscriptions

Groups consisting of accredited centres in the same ownership can apply to be treated as a group, and pay:

  • £1,410 for the group plus
  • £1,165 for the first two centres owned by the group (i.e. £2,575 for a group of 2 centres)
  • £930 each for the third and all subsequent centres
  • A supplementary subscription based on the aggregated total of the student weeks taught by all centres in the group.

Applications to be treated as a group must be made or renewed every January. The Chief Executive has discretion to decide what arrangements constitute a 'group' and continue to constitute a group. If a group ends its direct debit mandate, its individual centres will be assessed separately for their Supplementary Subscriptions.

Copyright Licensing Agency Fee

Private sector members can join the English UK Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) Scheme, which gives a discount on the licence fees based on student weeks. For 2015 the Member rate is £0.3409 plus VAT per student week, and must be paid by March 31.

Accreditation UK Scheme Fee

The Accreditation UK Fee is banded according to student week figures and so once members have completed their annual declaration we invoice on behalf of the British Council. The British Council's financial year runs from April 1 to March 31.

English UK members get a discount of £100 on their Accreditation UK fee.
