The closure of an accredited English language centre is a rare occurrence. However, when this does happen, the most important concern is that students are taken care of and their programme of study is able to continue with the least disruption. This is an important element of the quality assurance offered by English UK. Member organisations are expected to share responsibility for providing alternative accredited English language courses where possible, at no additional cost to the students. This responsibility is stated in the rules of membership.
In addition to this shared responsibility, English UK has a Student Emergency Support Fund (SESF), which is used to provide emergency assistance to students affected by the closure of the member centre. This would normally cover such things as accommodation fees paid by students up to the date of declaration of insolvency, or assistance with the cost of travelling if the alternative course provided is at a distance from the closed member centre. The SESF does not provide payment to institutions for the tuition of students from stricken centres.
The frequency of centre closures should not be over-stated. The SESF was set up 16 years ago and has only been called on 11 times.
