By January 2008, in accordance with European Union regulations, everybody applying for a visa for the UK, including visit visa, will be required to provide biometric data. This will consist of 10-digit finger scands and a digital photograph. The turnaround time from digital scanning to confirmation to post is estimated at 30 minutes.

There will not be a “big bang” date for implementation globally. Regions will introduce the programme on a rolling basis with posts going live from when the equipment has been installed with all countries being covered by the end of 2007. English UK is currently agreeing with UK Visas a text to publicise the programme to members and agents worldwide and to put a positive message out to potential students. It is expected that this text will include a timetable of when individual regions will be implementing the programme.
