Meads School of English closes
Long-established Eastbourne centre, the Meads School of English, closed today, Friday 3 November, after its Board decided that it was at risk of trading insolvently.English UK had been alerted the previous day and mobilised its emergency support service, the Student Emergency Support Fund, to ensure that students can complete the courses they have paid for and stay with the same host families. All 20 students on roll at Meads have been found alternative courses at three neighbouring centres in Eastbourne, the Eastbourne School of English, GEOS/LTC, and Twin.
English UK deputy chief executive Mark Rendell travelled to Eastbourne on the day of closure to talk to the students and assure them that they would not lose money in the closure and outline to them the alternative arrangements which English UK and Eastbourne member centres had made for them.
The SESF and mutual support arrangement are a key assurance to students and a reason why they should choose an English UK member centre for peace of mind and security. No other UK centres can offer this guarantee.
Another centre, Bidbury for English has now ceased trading.
