Home Office announcement of Border Control Strategy
On Wednesday 29th March, Home Office Minister Liam Byrne outlined tougher immigration measures that will see visitors to the UK being screened ‘as far away from our shores as possible’.
Visa applicants will have their biometric data checked against government and police databases. Further checks will be carried out at check-in and on arrival in the UK, where visitors will go through tougher screening. Non-visa nationals will also have their biometrics taken and checked on arrival in the UK.
In addition, the Government’s strategy, ‘Securing the UK Border’ proposes tightening up on student visas by making it compulsory for all educational institutions to keep both enrolment and attendance records of overseas students. These new measures will be funded by the Borders and Immigration Agency budget and partly by the increased visa fees.
