Identifying dyslexia in multilingual learners with Anne Margaret Smith
9 October 2019

ELT professionals are becoming increasingly aware that some of their students may have specific learning differences such as dyslexia, but often it is not easy to get a formal identification. Class teachers are in a great position to start the assessment process, using tools designed specifically for this group of learners: Cognitive Assessments for Multilingual Learners.

This session takes participants through the process of evaluating where the learners' strengths are, as well as weaker areas, so that appropriate interventions can be put into place. Advice is also offered regarding seeking formal assessment, for example, in order to apply for exam access arrangements.

There are many factors to take into account when working with multilingual learners, including cultural differences, diverse linguistic profiles and assessment issues. This session offers an overview of these main issues and suggests tasks that can be done with a whole group or an individual learner to find out more about:

  • The student's background and previous education
  • Literacy development
  • Memory
  • Speed of processing
  • Phonological awareness

There is also the chance to consider how to interpret the performances on these assessment tasks, as well as how to proceed once the learner's needs have been identified.

Outcomes

This session empowers participants to take the initiative in identifying the learning needs of their students, to understand what factors may be barriers to their learning and to separate out the language learning process from any underlying cognitive difference.
