Work experience programmes in the UK

Work experience programmes offer a fulfilling learning experience and are proven to enhance students’ career prospects.

By undertaking a work placement, a student trainee can gain hands-on experience in an authentic working environment, acquire a broad range of practical skills, improve their day-to-day language competences and meet a wide variety of people. Undertaking a work experience programme in the UK will give students the valuable knowledge, skills and experience needed for the future success of their career.

It is British Government policy to welcome foreign graduates with skills to come and train here, or students to come on study and temporary work placements. For students from visa countries who wish to do work placement programmes in the UK, they must enrol on a course that meets the new visa requirements, which are:

  1. the work placement programme must be at National Vocational Qualification level 3
  2. the programme must consist of 50 % classroom tuition and 50% placement
  3. the course provider must be accredited and on the UK Border Agency's Register of Sponsors

Work Experience UK, which is a special interest group of English UK, formed a partnership with Edexcel, the world’s largest exam board, to launch the Work Skills Plus qualification in August this year.

The new qualification not only enables schools to provide more structured work experience programmes, but it also satisfies the current visa requirements for work experience programmes in the UK.

All Work Experience UK members are accredited by the British Council, which has the most rigorous standards in the world, with more observation of teaching than in any other accreditation process. It is your guarantee of a quality course.
