Trekking for children in Tajikistan

Our Professional Services Manager, Tom Weatherley, is currently embarking on a trek in the Yak-strewn valleys of the Pamirs, Tajikistan for childrens charity, Healthprom.

With high altitude, temperatures down to freezing at night and attempting to carry all food and supplies, we wish him the best of luck!

Healthprom is a charity which works to improve infant and maternal health in Central Asia and Eastern Europe. Families with disabled children get almost no support and are often extremely isolated. This can be compounded by attitudes to disability in society. The most vulnerable children are often placed in state care, which is underfunded, understaffed and poorly resourced.

They help to run the Kishti Children's centre in Tajikistan's capital, Dushanbe. They do fantastic work, offering a nurturing environment for young children, crisis intervention, and support for mothers. They try and keep families together, and kids out of the state system.  It is a small centre, and they can't help every child, but their project makes a massive difference to people's lives, and is starting to influence care in state institutions.

The trip is completely self-funded so all the money goes to Healthprom projects. Click here to find out more about their projects.
