Welcome to the UK! Shakespeare Lives winners arrive from Central and South America

Welcome to the UK to our Shakespeare Lives competition winners from Central and South America.

Nine students from Argentina, Colombia, Mexico and Peru will be arriving in the UK over the coming weeks to start their three-week English language courses at nine English UK member centres across the country, who have agreed to host them.

With the help of their hosts, we will capture their experience in the UK to create a series of videos that explore different aspects of the UK student experience. We will then be able to use these short, fun clips for months to come to inspire future students to learn English in the UK and reassure them that the UK continues to be a warm and welcoming country.

The video competition, run with the British Council as part of a global celebration of Shakespeare's influence on culture and languages, challenged entrants from Spanish-speaking Latin America to create a one-minute video in English inspired by Shakespeare.

The 30 most viewed videos were then considered by a panel of experts and the nine that scored most highly for inspiring others to discover William Shakespeare and for their creativity, won a three week, fully funded English language course in the UK.

Why the focus on Latin America?

This region is an important sending market for English language teaching (ELT) programmes and home to three of the top 20 markets identified by English UK members - Brazil, Colombia and Mexico.

However, although English language students from Latin America account for 15% globally, they are underrepresented in the UK (at 11% of total student weeks). It offers opportunity for UK English Language recruitment.
