2012 was the best year for UK tourism since 2008, according to new figures from VisitBritain.
Despite fears that the Olympics would seriously damage inbound tourism, there was a one per cent increase in visits compared with 2011 and a four per cent increase in spending.
Students visiting the UK on short courses are not counted separately, but the category in which they are included showed a three per cent rise over the previous year. The same category had shown a sharp drop in early 2012 and but a steep 12 per cent increase during the last three months of the year
The provisional figures from the Inbound Passenger Survey show that December was a particularly good month, with visits up 12 per cent over the previous year and growth from all parts of the world.
