New Board members, change in the government and upcoming APPG meeting

Summer seems to have arrived at last, and judging by some of the chats I have had with members it promises to be very busy, which is excellent news. I hope you all have a very successful summer season.

As I write this, the government has just signed a pact with the DUP... there has been so much speculation and analysis in the press about who might be governing us and for how long, any further comment would, I fear, be superfluous. We now have a government with a working majority and this will hopefully bring some clarity and certainty.

I believe we should all take encouragement from the more positive rhetoric we have been hearing: net migration targets were not mentioned in the Queen's Speech, and a softer approach to Brexit appears to be within reach. We will be monitoring the debate very closely and will update you regularly.

Some of you will hopefully be reaching out to new MPs: there are some constituencies with large numbers of English UK schools, so you might like to coordinate. As soon as we have a clear idea of the direction of the debate re immigration, Brexit and visas, we will be giving all centres detailed briefings.

I am pleased to tell you that the APPG for international students will be holding its first post-election meeting on Wednesday 12 July, and that Nicky Morgan, former Education Secretary, will be an officer. All MPs are invited so please urge your local MP to attend.

We welcomed four new trustees to their first board meeting last week after the elections in spring:

  • Shoko Doherty from CELTIC Academy
  • Ella Tyler from Mountlands School
  • Fraser Davis from EF
  • Jose Brinkmann from Country Cousins

I am pleased to announce that the new board elected Mark Rendell as vice chair. We grateful to them and all our trustees for the time and effort they volunteer on your behalf.

We had a very productive board meeting: the trustees approved the direction of travel for our new strategic plan for 2018-2020, to lead the industry to success, as outlined very briefly at the AGM, and we will now develop that for unveiling in November.
