Pearson

IELTS speaking: identifying success using Pearson's new Expert IELTS course

How familiar is this to you? Students complete a speaking task in pairs; pairs summarise their discussion for the teacher and then the teacher provides feedback to the class. I have used this approach many times but does it allow each student to have a clear idea of whether they were successful in that task or not?

Success criteria have been used in mainstream education in the UK for some time. The idea is that learners analyse an effective model and, with help from the teacher, come up with a list of criteria that make it clear what success is in that task. Students complete the task, recording it if possible, and self-assess their performance against the criteria.  By having clear learning goals, learning is more visible to the student (Hattie, 2012).

Success criteria for IELTS tasks already exist in the form of the band descriptors and so feature in many IELTS lessons. However, the language used can make them inaccessible. By getting students to use models to come up with their own criteria for speaking tasks, it can be more meaningful to students when they later see similar criteria in the descriptors. By self-assessing against the criteria regularly and systematically, learners become more aware of their strengths, weaknesses, progress and what they still need to achieve to obtain a particular band. Expert IELTS is designed to better help students understand how to be successful at different band levels and recognise when they have achieved that success.
