Fred Shi Shengchao, 21, comes from Beijing in China. He studied at English UK member Bournemouth Business School International in Bournemouth in 2008. Eventually he plans to work in his family business, sending students to study abroad.

What are you studying?

I have been doing management, and work experience and English at Bournemouth Business School International (BBSI). This year I am going to Exeter University to study Business Management.

Why did you choose to come to the UK?

I have always wanted to study English. Education here in this country is very highly recognised for its quality and is very famous as well for business study. My family have contacts in the UK so it was easier for me to come than some people.

What made you choose the language school and town?

I didn't! The agent did. But I just love it here. And I love BBSI – that's why I've been here for more than a year. I find the management course very structured and the teaching is very high quality. It's also very practical – it is very good preparation for university.

Are you enjoying your time in the UK?

Yes – it's very different. I like the weather. It's quite surprising because it is so changeable. You don't expect it. There is always something changing.

But I don't like the food. I am doing a lot of cooking for myself.

When I first came I found the culture and the way people did things quite different from my country. Now it seems OK.

Has learning English changed your life?

I find learning English very important for me in my personal career. If I go back to China there will be much more opportunities than for people who can't speak English. There will be international opportunities.

Would you recommend learning English in the UK to your friends?

I would recommend coming here. It's a great opportunity and a completely different culture. Sometimes I go back to my friends and they don't understand what I am talking about. I would say to my friends, look, it's a great opportunity to speak English with native language speakers. You learn really fast as well.
