Handan Kazanci, a 26-year-old magazine journalist from Istanbul, spent two weeks at the Eastbourne School of English in spring 2008 after winning a Let Your English Grow scholarship.
I think it's the best way to learn a language. Before I went to the UK, I took English lessons and almost all my teachers were from the USA. So I was more familiar with American English.
But now after living in the UK for a while I can understand how different are the languages. I can say that the sound of UK's English and American English is totally different. I really feel that I did a good job going to the UK instead of the USA to learn English.
I have been England before so I knew that Eastbourne is near the seaside. It was a really nice town and also the school was so nice. I shouldn't forget to say that the teachers were excellent too.
I enjoyed my time in the UK. The thing that I liked most in the UK was travelling. I had the chance to travel around Eastbourne.
Yes. I was thinking that I knew English before I went to the UK, because I took lots of English courses in İstanbul and my grammar and vocabulary knowledge was quite good. But I think most of the language learners have the same problem: I couldn't speak English. Living in the UK for a while made me more confident and I am relaxed when I am speaking in English now.
I am working for a magazine as a journalist. I think it would be more difficult for me to find a job without English. As I a journalist, I have to know other languages as well as English. Now I am planning to learn another language.
Of course I would. I did a really nice time in Eastbourne and made good friends. It was like a two-week holiday and I learnt also English. It was an experience that I will never forget. Thank you very much to all the people who work for this competition and Eastbourne School of English.
