Nottingham Institute of Languages and Intercultural Communication

Nottingham Institute of Languages and Intercultural Communication (NILIC) delivers innovative programmes of professional development, academic training and English and foreign language learning across a broad portfolio of certificates, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and short courses. Our Pre-sessional English for academic purposes (PEAP) courses are accredited by the British Council and we are members of English UK.

For those who want to enter or progress in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT) and gain a recognised qualification, we offer a Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) and a Masters in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

To support NTU’s international students the NILIC provides the Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes (PEAP) course, which helps develop the academic language and skills students need to begin their studies at NTU. We also provide Academic English and Language Support classes for students who are already studying an undergraduate or postgraduate degree. These classes help them to develop the academic language and literacy skills all students need to make the most of their studies. In addition, NILIC delivers free non-academic English language classes throughout the year for external students.

We are also home to the University Language Programme (ULP), currently providing nine key foreign language courses to over 1100 NTU students and the general public. This includes Arabic, English / Business English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. Our language classes are delivered at various levels of proficiency from beginner to advanced.

We work with a number of international partner institutions including the Communication University of China in Beijing, the Shanghai Culture and Creativity Centre and I-Shou University in Taiwan. We provide in-country Academic English classes to support the School’s collaborative degree programmes. We also collaborate with the VNUK Institute for Research and Executive Education in Vietnam in joint delivery of our MA ELT course.
