Friday, February 3rd, 2012 Online Course Design with Gavin Dudeney Online and blended learning play an increasing part in some teachers' lives as budget cuts and timetables, as well as the pressures of modern life, cut into face-to-face teaching and training. In this session we will review what makes a good online course, what makes a good online teacher and - most importantly - how to guarantee quality in these new media. Course details can be found here Please apply here
Saturday, February 4th, 2012 An Introduction to Digital Literacies with Gavin Dudeney In the Web 2.0 era the idea of basic numeracy and literacy ('the three Rs') has expanded to take in a wide range of new interactions: both interactions with content and social interactions with an increasingly global audience. In this session we will break down the idea of 'literacy' in the new digital era and examine what it means both in terms of the people we teach, and how we teach them. Participants need not be Directors of Studies, but can be teachers or other stakeholders, all of whom have a part to play in achieving effective academic management in their school. Thursday, February 9th, 2012 Differentiated Learning to Enhance Your Curriculum with Loraine Kennedy One of the key priorities within education is 'differentiated learning'. The goal of differentiated learning is to create an individualised learning path for every student. Student-centeredness takes on a deeper significance. The intention is to maximise student motivation in order for them to achieve meaningful outcomes and greater levels of successful learning. The purpose of this training day is to look at how this approach to learning and teaching can be applied within the ELT context, even when students are studying for as little as one week. Course details can be found here Please apply here
Saturday, February 11th, 2012 Getting the most out of your Interactive Whiteboard: approaches and pedagogies with Pete Sharma There are various approaches to teaching with an Interactive Whiteboard (IWB): using the board to run PowerPoint, the Internet, and regular EFL programs such as CD-ROMs in class; using the vast range of software which comes with the board; using 'whiteboardable' material, so-called 'interactive course books'; and of course, creating your own materials. As teachers become familiar with using the IWB, they begin to marry the use of the hardware and software with their own pedagogical know-how in new and exciting ways. Innovative ideas on presenting, practising and reviewing language start to emerge as the technology becomes normalised. Course details can be found here. Please apply here.

At the end of the day, participants will have created a new website, and, in doing so have learned how to work with developers and design agencies to create effective user experiences and integrate social media. They will understand the importance of issues such as search engine optimization and the people side of website management. Course details can be found here Please apply here
Thursday, February 23rd, 2012 Defining, Measuring and Ensuring Academic Quality with Diane Phillips and Fiona Dunlop This training day will explore the subject of quality in the classroom, from both an 'internal' and 'external' perspective. The session looks at the following questions: what do we mean by "quality"? What is good teaching? How do we recognise when successful learning is taking place? Can we measure teaching and learning? Which criteria might be useful? By reviewing recordings of teachers in action we can compare our views about good practice. This training day also explores the steps academic managers can take to achieve and maintain quality: making expectations and standards clear; giving guidance and support; providing useful feedback; raising self-awareness; and providing targeted CPD. Friday, March 9th, 2012 When the Customer rarely Rings twice: how to Succeed and Grow in the Age of the Never Satisfied Consumer with Will Kinsman According to many commentators, we are living in the age of the never-satisfied consumer. It's a world where cars start first time, all powders wash whiter than white and dishes always shine - and it's a world where consumer expectations are continually re-setting the customer service bar. In a sector such as ELT, which is becoming increasingly commoditised and competitive, opportunities to delight our customers can only become fewer whilst their tolerance of service shortfalls will continue to decrease, creating further pressures and real problems for those managing ELT businesses. Friday, March 16th, 2012 Where Learning Meets Leisure with Keith Harding Students coming to the UK to learn English often look for more than a modified version of the courses and classes they can get in their own country. They are drawn by the multi-lingual environment, the cultural and social opportunities, as well as by the attractions of the classroom. How well do we meet this need in the UK? Do we tap into the rich cultural and social context and integrate it into the student experience? Or do we treat it as tangential and ancillary, something that happens by chance? This workshop explores ways in which we can bridge the divide between learning and leisure. Course details can be found here Please apply here

In addition, both the staff and their students would benefit from some useful and practical training to increase and update teaching skills. An immediate challenge is how to cater for the range of experience teachers possess. Beyond training, are there opportunities for developing staff beyond the role for which they were hired, either immediately or in the future? Staff feels more valued if, despite a short contract, they are receiving development that could help them. Course details can be found here Please apply here
