Programme

09:30 – 09:45 | Welcome from English UK and our sponsors

09:45 – 10:30 | Creating a safe space for everyone to thrive: What does "bring your authentic self to work" mean through an EDI lens? with Louise Goux-Wirth

We talk a lot about "bringing your whole self to work" but what does this actually mean? Workplace inclusion goes deeper than HR policies, wellbeing days and reverse mentoring programmes. There is an urgent call for greater systematic change within organisations to support individuals to truly thrive at work. Creating a culture where everyone can be their authentic selves has a far-reaching impact beyond a "feel good" factor: rippling across your recruitment, retention and the success of your organisation. This talk will share best practice and recommendations to support you to turn ideals into reality and deliver your EDI strategy with impact.

10:40 – 11:10 | Managing your team's professional development and wellbeing in turbulent times with Fiona Dunlop

It is all about relationships, trust, motivation, working as a team for a common goal, understanding and empathy.

During the recent pandemic we have seen a real need for immediate and effective professional development to help keep schools afloat in turbulent times. We will look at how we have maintained good team morale through times of change whilst ensuring that our teams are developing to their full potential and at a pace that is comfortable for them.

We will look at what lessons we can take away from this time when schools found themselves in re-invention and survival mode. We will reflect on what worked well and can be implemented and built upon to allow us to future proof ourselves and our organisations, while moving on with a "wellbeing for all" approach.

11:40 – 12:10 | Shrinking your carbon footprint (and enhancing the image of your school) with Jonathan Dykes

The world is racing towards an environmental catastrophe that can only be halted by immediate and persistent action. Not just action on a geo-political scale, but action by schools, businesses, and individuals in their every-day habits and behaviours. Language schools – especially those that recruit students from abroad – need to step up and ensure that they are doing everything they can to lessen the impact their activities have on the environment; and reducing their carbon footprint is a relatively easy and painless way to get going. This talk will outline various steps you can take (without breaking the bank) which could benefit the school, as well as the environment.

11:40 – 12:10 | Service quality – how to maintain when teams are tired, reduced or completely new with Celine Aloe

You had an excellent reputation pre-Covid that you are determined to uphold but the pandemic has left you with a much smaller team, or lots of new inexperienced team members and everyone is carrying a heavier load than before. The challenge we face as an industry is to be at our best when the numbers of students start to flood back in, but our resources are at an all-time low.

We will discuss redefining our purpose and mission in the post pandemic world and meeting ourselves where we are at. We will also look at feedback from students and from our teams and how to use it to consistently to make the right changes in the right way

12:20 – 12:50 | Update on British Council inspections 2022 with Liz McLaren and Stuart Pollard

In 2022, we mark 40 years of British Council accreditation. The scheme has evolved considerably since the early days of 'recognition', especially so in the last two years. After a pause in 2020-21 (with language centres given an additional year between inspections), the re-inspection schedule has now resumed.

Whether your language centre is now for inspection in 2022 or you're just interested to hear how things are going, this session will give you more information on how inspections are adapting to current challenges.

12:20 – 12:50 | Measuring up? Andy Gaskins & Sally Jones

In this session we will look at different ways to assess the quality of teachers and teaching in ELT. There will be a focus on how different types of observations may be used to make objective measurements of teaching standards, but we will also cast the net beyond these fundamentals, asking what other measures might be available to help us assess how our teaching team meet the wider needs of our students and our schools with the ultimate goal of supporting and building an excellent teaching team as we emerge from the pandemic.

13:00 – 13:30 | Differentiating ELT products and services in a crowded space with Ann Hawkings

Stand out in the crowd and leverage opportunities to suit your brand. We will look at how to differentiate your ELT products and services in a mature, commoditised market by adopting a customer value driven strategy that considers international market segmentation. By identifying your centre's competitive advantages and expertise and combining those with in-depth knowledge of your market and customers, we will consider how to develop ELT products or renew existing ones. We will also look at how to seek and seize the opportunities which suit your brand in a recovering ELT market.

13:00 – 13:30 | Putting our teachers at the centre of their development with Gill Davidson & David Byrne

We have implemented a teaching training system for new and existing teachers, to ensure our teachers are supported in lesson delivery in a way that considers the wide variety of knowledge and experience in our staffrooms.

In this session we will discuss how we developed a diagnostic induction and series of micro trainings with the aim of creating a more personalised approach to training and development. Based on the Visible Learning research we will talk about how we encourage teachers to develop a dialogue with their peers and academic managers to put them at the centre of their own learning.

13:30 – 14:30 | Lunch and exhibition

14:30 – 15:45 | Workshops and discussions

16:15 – 17:15 | Closing keynote: Matthew Burton

What we do, who we do it for, and why we do it

An insight into the unique role of the teacher in 2022, a reminder of why we get up in the morning to do what we do, and a reflection on the reason for us being in the role: our brilliant students.

Matthew Burton is the Headteacher at Thornhill Community Academy in Wakefield, and one of the UK's most recognisable teachers. He rose to prominence as an English Teacher in 2013 after starring in Channel 4's multi award-winning documentary series Educating Yorkshire. Many remember the incredible breakthrough moment with Musharaf Asghar, who brought millions of TV and YouTube viewers to tears across the world. Matthew is committed to achieving the very best for every child, and to ensuring that barriers to opportunity – whatever they may be – are challenged, removed and banished, to allow every young person to be the very best they can be.
