Golfer's father wins GBP 100,000

Golfer Rory McIlroy is celebrating after winning The Open in the UK last week. It was a very special day for the player, who became the first European player to win three different major golf tournaments. Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus are the only players to have done this before.

It was also a very special day for his father, Gerry. Ten years ago Gerry put a GBP200 bet on his son winning the Open by the age of 25. The bet would pay him GBP100,000. Some of his friends also bet on Rory, and they were likely to win GBP 80,000.

What do the Rolling Stones do on tour?

The Rolling Stones have been together for more than 50 years. For their first few decades their tours were famous for parties and drugs.

They are on tour at the moment, but the rock and roll lifestyle has disappeared. Ronnie Wood, the guitarist, has told a newspaper that they like to watch box sets of TV shows between concerts.

Wood said that Mick Jagger had introduced him to Game of Thrones and that the band had sent out an employee to buy the final series of Breaking Bad at 4am in Shanghai.

Prince George is 1

It was Prince George's first birthday this week and most newspapers were full of the story. The Royal Family released new pictures of the Prince walking and in a butterfly exhibition. We were told that he had two birthday parties.

There was not much else to say but that did not stop newspapers writing lots of stories about the Prince, who is third in line to the throne.

International sporting event opens in Glasgow

It is the Commonwealth Games this week, and it is being held in Scotland. The opening ceremony was intended to "show the very best of Scotland" and included a giant Loch Ness Monster, lots of people in kilts and dancers dressed as locally produced cakes.

Now there will be 11 days of competition with 22 events and almost 5,000 athletes.

One bit of the opening ceremony that got lots of publicity was the Queen. She appeared smiling in the background of a photograph of two Australian athletes. People on Twitter joked that she had "photobombed" the "selfie" (a photobomb is when something or someone gets into a photograph unexpectedly, and a "selfie" is a photo people take of themselves, usually on a phone)

Extreme summer weather hits the UK

It has been a very hot summer here so far, and for the last ten days a lot of the UK has had heatwave conditions. As a result of the heatwave, we also had extreme thunderstorms over the weekend. Many of the storms were much more severe than we usually get here, and people reported being kept awake for hours by thunder and lightning, and huge hailstones.

There was also very heavy rain which caused flooding in some areas.

It is still extremely hot in the UK and the good weather is forecast to carry on, possibly for another few weeks.
