UK ELT opportunities: the Hungarian Scholarship Programme

The Hungarian government's scholarship programme is a great opportunity for students to experience UK ELT and for centres to access a previously small market – but how much do you know about it?

At our Marketing Conference earlier this month, we welcomed Timea Tiboldi and Zoltan Racz from Tempus Public Foundation, the agency which is operating the scheme for the Hungarian Government. Their pre-conference briefing explained the project in detail: watch the full video below.

"We really appreciate that so many language centres are involved in this," said Timea. Listening to comments from the floor, she agreed that they would consider opening the scheme earlier next year so that schools which are usually full in the summer can arrange extra capacity. The scheme will also be open to teachers next year.

Around 120 language centres had registered to be part of the scheme so far, said Zoltan, adding that while there had already been tens of thousands of pre-bookings, there was still availability.

They explained that the scheme is open to students aged 15-19, with 140,000 potential applications. They are eligible for a two-week English language summer course between Saturday 13 June and Monday 31 August in either the UK, Ireland or Malta.

Students can come individually or as part of a group, but must have parental consent, and the application procedure is open for 30 days for groups and 60 for individuals. Groups can apply between mid-February and mid-March, with individuals able to apply until mid-April.

Participating centres get paid directly by Tempus. "Once you confirm courses we will do everything to transfer money as soon as possible. We are not going to wait for all your courses to be filled up, we will transfer the money individually," said Zoltan. Tempus will also check students for eligibility.
