The English school with its own cinema!
14 April 2009

Students at the Anglolang school in North Yorkshire can improve their English whilst they relax.

For the school has its own 36-seat cinema.

"It's been very successful. We usually show English or American films with English subtitles so there can be some learning going on at the same time," said principal (ck) Gustav Edner.

The school, in the Yorkshire seaside town of Scarborough, got its little cinema when it converted a couple of garages. It has a licence which means it can show recent films.

Last week's showing was of the latest Woody Allen comedy Vicky Cristina Barcelona, which was popular with the students. Anglolang shows American family comedies most regularly.

Mr Edner cannot guarantee that every student will get into the screenings, since the cinema is so small.

But there are plenty of other cultural activities in Scarborough. The town has its own cinema, and a theatre where the plays of Alan Ayckbourn are first performed.
