UK-German agreement confirmed in latest Immigration Rule changes
German school groups to travel on ID cards
Following our July news update on German school group travel, we now have confirmation in the Immigration Rule changes published on Tuesday 14 October, that students travelling as part of a German school group will not require passports or visas.
There is no implementation date yet. We will provide an update as soon as a date is published.
The new scheme will mirror the arrangement the UK already has with France.
The key points are:
-
It applies to students aged 19 years and under studying at a German school or similar institution who are visiting the UK as part of a school party of five or more.
-
EU, EEA and Swiss nationals will be able to travel to the UK with their national identity card rather than a passport if they meet the above requirements.
-
The rule also applies to students who are third-country nationals. They may also be able to travel to the UK without a passport or visa if they have a valid ID card.
-
Students will not need to obtain an ETA (electronic travel authorisation).
Other changes in the latest Immigration Rules
The changes also include a new B2 level English language requirement, up from B1, for applicants entering the UK with a Skilled Worker visa. There is also a small maintenance fee increase for students applying for a Student Visa.
