Sussex and Kent centres start their own regional group

English UK South-East has been launched – just in time for StudyWorld Brighton.

12 member centres from the Sussex coast and Canterbury attended the inaugural meeting in Eastbourne.

"We've been hoping to get a group to represent members in this very important region of the UK and we're delighted that it's finally happening," said Huan Japes, acting joint chief executive of English UK who attended the meeting. "They already have a few things planned, including organising an unofficial fam trip to Brighton and Lewes to tie in with StudyWorld.

"We talked about problems facing ELT and the wider hospitality sector, including high costs and supplier costs and the NI increase."

James Herbertson, vice-chair of English UK's Board of Trustees and a former chair of English UK London became the launch chair for the first year.

It was agreed to run the group on a 'freemium' model which means eligible member centres are enrolled at no cost but a charge may be made to participate in some activities. There will be four meetings a year, with two online and one each in Sussex and Canterbury.

Student social activities are being considered and the group has agreed to work on safeguarding with local officials.
