English UK statement: meningococcal disease (MenB) outbreak in Kent
English UK is aware of an ongoing meningococcal disease (MenB) outbreak in Kent. This is a serious but uncommon illness, and our thoughts are with those affected and their families and friends.
What UK health authorities are saying
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is leading the response and has confirmed the risk to the wider population remains low. Meningococcal disease is not easily spread and typically requires close, prolonged contact, such as kissing or sharing drinks or vapes.
What action is being taken
Targeted precautions are in place, and guidance is available for students, staff and schools in the wider region. The UKHSA is currently carrying out contact tracing and providing preventive antibiotics and targeted MenB vaccinations to those identified as close contacts of confirmed cases.
What this means for students, staff and schools
For most people, including students, staff and the general public, no action is needed at this time. However, it is important to be aware of the symptoms of meningitis and to seek urgent medical advice if symptoms develop, as early treatment can be lifesaving. Further guidance is available from the UK Health Security Agency.
Message for English UK members, partners and students
Please share official UK government health guidance with your school community to help reassure students, partners, parents and staff. English UK will continue to monitor the situation and share updates if needed.
