The biggest UK lottery win

A couple from England won £56m on the European Euromillions lottery this week.

Nigel Page checked his numbers on the computer when he heard that there was a British winner in the draw.  He was so surprised by his winning message that he went upstairs to wake his partner, Justine Laycock, to read it as well.

The family then went to eat bacon rolls for breakfast in their local supermarket. They plan to buy a larger car and a bigger house, and their children want a tarantula spider and a pony.

Pop music awards

The Brit Awards celebrated its 30th anniversary this week. This London-based music awards has categories for British and worldwide artists.

The biggest winner was American singer Lady GaGa, who took three awards home. This was more than any British artist. Other winners included Lily Allen, Florence and the Machine and Dizzee Rascal.

Robbie Williams won an award for outstanding contribution to music. It was the 16th Brit award he has won. He said: “I feel like it’s my birthday.”

A baby at last

A British woman has become a mother at last after losing 18 babies during her pregnancies.

Angie Baker had baby Raiya after finding a doctor who specialises in treating women who lose babies several times. Dr Hassan Shehata, who treated Miss Baker, said this was the most unusual case he had seen.

Best-selling author dies

Dick Francis, who wrote action-packed novels for more than 30 years, has died.

Before he took up writing he rode racehorses. He rode 345 winners during his nine-year career. He wrote 40 novels, all set in the world of racing, which sold more than 60m copies.

For a long time he wrote one book a year. The novels were very popular and his fans included the Royal Family.
