British Council extends accreditation to include online/blended courses

The British Council have announced that their accreditation scheme will be extended to include blended/online courses with synchronous (live) teaching, starting with provision offered by providers already accredited by the British Council.

The Accreditation UK Board has accelerated its plans due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Procedure for extending accreditation

During the introductory phase, accreditation will be extended to already accredited language centres on the submission of:

  • a completed self-evaluation
  • confirmed compliance with the Accreditation UK Code of practice for online ELT
  • a separate safeguarding risk assessment will be required if teaching is provided to under 18s.

By submitting the declaration, providers commit to declare any continuation or development of online provision beyond lock-down and have it inspected when circumstances permit.

These providers will be listed on the British Council website (showing inspection pending) and permitted to use the Accreditation Scheme marque in relation to their declared online offer.

If providers are found not to be acting in the spirit of the accreditation scheme and in compliance with the code of practice, permission to use the Accreditation Scheme marque will be withheld/withdrawn.
