English UK member, International House London, and Beijing Normal University and Hong Kong Baptist University (BNU-HKBU United International College) completed the first Cambridge English CELT-S programme to run in China in September.

BNU-HKBU United International College is a regular provider of teacher training to state school teachers in Zhuhai and was looking for a teacher training programme to meet the needs of local teachers in their city. And IH London, working as a partner for developing training in the area, suggested the Cambridge CELT-S programme and together they decided to run the first course with local secondary schools in the area.

Cambridge CELT-S trainers worked on the programme throughout to observe lessons and give feedback, mark assignments and run workshops; IH helped select and train local trainers, ran the CELT-S trainer training and launched the course; and the project was supported by the Education Bureau in Zhuhai.

Charlotte Thompson, director of training at IH London, visited the course half way through to observe lessons with the trainers and discuss progress and grading. She said, "meeting with the teachers, their feedback was overwhelmingly positive."

"Participants told us how much they were enjoying the online course, how relevant it was to their teaching, that the ideas were either new or a very clear consolidation of things they had heard of. The trainers also said the experience of training on the course was enjoyable and was supporting their own professional development."
