The Eddie Byers Scholarship: open to applications
22 March 2017

It is a pleasure to open the Eddie Byers Scholarship up to applications to enrich and support individuals and communities through English language teaching.

English is spoken by billions of people around the world. For many, learning English brings significant new opportunities and is a life changing skill.

The Eddie Byers Scholarship will provide funding to create English language learning opportunities that might not otherwise be available and that would be transformative for individuals and their communities, whether by enabling employment, education or integration.

We know many English UK member centres undertake charitable activities and we are delighted to further support and contribute to this culture, and to the positive impact ELT already has in the UK.

English language teaching not only generates jobs and £1.2 bn in export revenue in the UK, but also supports cultural exchange and gives thousands of students fond memories of the UK. We have been overwhelmed by support from friends and colleagues to create the scholarship fund, and are proud of the difference we know it will make.

The scholarship has been created in memory of English UK's late chief executive, Eddie Byers, to honour his passion for education and support English UK's charitable object: to advance the education of international students in the English language.

UK registered charities can apply for funding up to £2,500 and applications will be assessed against the beneficiary's need, the project's impact and focus on English language teaching.
