Licking language into shape: learning English through etymology with Susie Dent
At English UK we are passionate about the English language and we love that our ELT conference on 17 and 18 January in London is a place for delegates to share that passion too. To give a fascinating insight into the language and a fitting close a conference dedicated UK ELT, we are delighted to welcome back Susie Dent.
Susie is a world-renowned expert on the English language, with many books, TV appearances and radio shows to her name.
After two days of best practice talks and discussions on ELT's place in the world, Susie will bring the focus back onto the language we love, with a talk on the origins of words and phrases. She will explore the secret origins of our vocabulary that help shine a light on its creation and help to explain why it's so unpredictable.
Etymology is now on the curriculum for native speakers - should it be for non-native speakers too? Susie will give lots of examples of words that wear their hearts on their sleeves if only we'd stop to look, and of idioms that, ridiculous as it might seem, had a surprisingly literal beginning.
Susie Dent, lexicographer and etymologist has informed us of the beauty (or otherwise) of the English language for years. Best known as the face of Countdown's Dictionary Corner, where she has made over 2,500 appearances, she holds a masters degree in German, is a widely published writer, regularly features on radio and TV, and is honorary vice president of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders among many other achievements.
Conference Producer Tom Weatherley said: "Susie gave a fantastic close to the event last year, and we were keen to get her back. I remember being an English language teacher, and seeing the origin and development of words and phrases, and the stories behind that really lighten up a lesson, and fascinate both me and the students. After two days of a varied programme, I'm sure this will end the event on a high."
Last year's delegates said:
|"Susie was really interesting and it was great to explore language with her. A great closing plenary - thank you!" – Kate Smook, Millfield Enterprises
|"Great idea to have a speaker like Susie Dent, such a wealth of knowledge, interesting points about language and not a teacher." – Florence Coquery, Stafford House
|"Super inspiring! Really great to have someone outside the 'TEFL bubble'" – Sally Papasotiriou, Stafford House London
