14 day self-isolation rules for UK arrivals

The UK government has announced that people arriving to the UK from Monday 8 June 2020 will need to self-isolate in their accommodation for 14 days.

This new measure will be reviewed every three weeks, so will be in operation until at least Monday 29 June 2020. Anyone moving from within the Common Travel Area (Republic of Ireland/ Channel Islands) is exempt.

How will new arrivals monitored?

  • People arriving to the UK will be required to complete a 'Contact Locator Form' providing contact and travel information
  • There will be spot checks and £1000 fines (in England; the Devolved Nations will set their own enforcement approaches) for those found to be not complying with the mandatory conditions.

Implications for English UK member centres

Quarantining rules will require language centres to prepare differently for new arrivals with regard to transport and accommodation during the 14 day period.

  • Travel from airport to accommodation should be made by taxi or private pick up, rather than public transport
  • Students should not leave their accommodation for 14 days after arrival
  • The government guidance references hotels, and friends or family, as appropriate self-isolation accommodation options (we consider homestay or student residences to be appropriate, provided the host or residence manager is able to minimise contact between the arriving student and other residents)
  • In all cases, hosts or accommodation providers will need to do any shopping and provide all meals to the student during the quarantine period
  • Preparation should be made to ensure the student spend as little time as possible in shared living spaces.

We will be providing detailed guidance very soon to help members prepare to provide appropriate quarantining arrangements and to safely manage classroom reopening with social distancing.
