English UK's statement on Ukraine: Friday 4 March 2022

We are deeply shocked and appalled by the decision of the Russian government to invade Ukraine. The consequences of this violent invasion and the humanitarian crisis that is unfolding will affect many people across the ELT community. We condemn the invasion and express our support for the people of Ukraine and our many Ukrainian colleagues and partners and their students, families, friends, and neighbours.

We know some of our members are supporting Ukrainian students and colleagues currently in the UK, and those who arrive here fleeing the conflict. We also know of members with Ukrainian students who are extremely distressed yet have chosen to return to Ukraine to join the fight and we send them our thoughts and courage. We are also mindful of the position of Russian colleagues, students, partners, and friends, many of whom oppose this conflict at great personal risk.

In response, we are taking the following steps:

  • We are focusing on what we can do to support Ukrainian students and colleagues
  • We are assisting and supporting our members by signposting to resources and guidance as well as ways to help
  • We are using our influence to address issues such as visa conditions and access to financial support and are seeking urgent guidance for Ukrainian students currently in the UK on Visitor or Short-term study visas who are unable to return home
  • We are considering how UK ELT can best support Ukrainian refugees who are fleeing the conflict
  • We are working with our members and colleagues in the wider UK international education sector to understand more about the support and advice needed
  • We have advised our members to review their current and planned activities in light of UK government announcements on economic sanctions targeting Russia and Belarus.

As an international education community, let us reflect on the role that all of us can play in sustaining hope through intercultural exchange, which promotes tolerance, dignity and compassion for all.
