Hungary's Foreign Language Learning Programme postponed until 2023

Unfortunately we have learned that Hungary's Foreign Language Learning Programme, run by the Tempus Public Foundation, will be postponed until 2023 and no students will travel in 2022.

Statement by the Hungarian government

The reasons given in a public statement by the Hungarian government ministerial commissioner responsible for coordinating the study trips are related to the uncertainty created by the Covid-19 pandemic. The announcement, which is in Hungarian, states that 'We are all confident that in 2023 there will be no more obstacles to the implementation of the programme'. The programme was originally planned to run for five years from 2020.

We also understand that other political factors may be at play. There was a discreet announcement on 23 December 2021 that the programme's budget was to be slashed in half, and there are elections in Hungary in April 2022.

We know how important this programme is to many of our members, and are devastated for everybody involved. We continue to liaise behind the scenes with all stakeholders including Tempus and the British Embassy and British Council in Hungary.

We had already received the news just before Christmas that the programme for Hungarian teachers would be postponed until summer 2023.

English with Confidence campaign

We are committed to supporting the promotion of UK ELT in what we hope will be a year of recovery by working with our partners in the British government and British Council through the English with Confidence campaign. We know that there is much to do, and this disappointing news only increases the pressure and size of the challenge.
