English UK launches updated position paper and calls for government action

English UK's updated position paper will be launched at a reception in Parliament next week.

Three of the original paper's six asks were achieved to some degree within weeks of its launch last May, but we are asking the government to go furtherThe paper has been updated to reflect the current situation.

Progress made but more to do

The updated paper builds on last year's recommendations. English UK is now urging the government to "go further and faster" to turn early wins into meaningful, long-term change. With the UK government aiming to grow international education exports to £40 billion, English UK is calling for targeted, practical support to ensure the ELT sector can play its full part.

Huan Japes, Membership Director at English UK, said:

"It was fantastic to achieve half of our asks so quickly, but we are pushing the government to go further and faster. These are simple, cost-effective changes that would allow our sector to thrive and help deliver the UK's international education ambitions."

Book for our parliamentary reception

The updated position paper will be formally launched at a parliamentary reception on May 20, bringing together members, stakeholders and policymakers.

Over 80 English UK members and stakeholders have booked their places at the parliamentary reception so far, with many inviting their MPs. The last day to book a place is Monday 18 May. Skills minister Baroness Jacqui Smith is the main speaker.

Help us make the case for UK ELT

English UK is encouraging members, partners and stakeholders to share the position paper with their MPs and highlight the importance of the ELT sector to their local area.

English UK's six asks are:

  • Expand career-enhancing travel opportunities for young people
  • Extend ID card travel for school groups from the EU
  • Recognise UK ELT's accreditation scheme for student visas
  • Make the most of Erasmus+
  • Increase rent-a-room tax relief to preserve UK ELT's unique offer
  • Provide stronger support for growth in the UK ELT sector

Download the position paper and share it with your MP to help ensure the UK remains a leading destination for English language learning.
