English is GREAT: Speak to the World is a major, multi-channel English UK campaign to promote the UK as the world's premier English language learning destination in Brazil.

Brazilian students were invited to make one-minute films on the subject 'what English means to me' for the chance to win one of five fully funded two week scholarship to the UK, hosted by English UK's national and regional groups. Over the next few weeks our winners will be introducing themselves to you.

First is Laio Veloso who is being hosted by English UK South West. He won the judges over by writing and performing a song called English Is GREAT.

"Hi there! This is Laio Veloso, born and raised in Brasilia.

I like to watch movies and series, listen to music and surf the Internet. I also like to sing, play the guitar and go for a walk in the City Park. I'm a very open-minded person who likes to laugh a lot

I work for the Government  at the Ministry of Culture but entered the competition because I really need to improve my English in order to get a job in the International Relations field.

I don't feel comfortable when I have to speak English in public or with other people. The immersion process will force me to speak English and I'm sure this will be the beginning of the path to fluency in English.

Winning the competition made me feel like one of the happiest people in the world! I'm so excited and can't wait to be in the UK! Having the chance to learn new things and be in contact with a new culture will be AWESOME!"

Follow the English is GREAT: Speak to the World campaign:

Our winners will travel to the UK next month, making vlogs about their experiences and presenting special seminars at the Salão do Estudante fairs in spring 2016. English UK member centres will join them at Salão do Estudante in an English is GREAT pavilion.

Funded by the GREAT UK Challenge Fund, this campaign aims to reach more than 17 million people through travelling classrooms, two video competitions, social media and a digital video wall of current and prospective Brazilian students sharing 'what English means to me'.
