Help your students thrive with wellbeing and learning differences training

This training day is focused on student welfare and how your centre can best support your students.

The morning will be a session with Anne Margaret Smith, focusing on identifying and including learners with specific learning differences. The afternoon will be a workshop with Ruth Hughes on promoting international student wellbeing. English UK hopes this full day training event will fill a gap in ELT by allowing our centres to and help all students with their wellbeing as well as identify and include students with special educational needs.

Identifying and including learners with specific learning differences (Anne Margaret Smith)

In any group of learners, there will be some who process information in an atypical way and may experience challenges with language learning. Most will not (yet) have been assessed or identified as having a specific learning difference like dyslexia or dyspraxia, but we may become aware of their different ways of learning as we work with them. It's not always necessary to obtain a formal diagnosis, but it is useful to understand where the areas of challenge lie so that we can adapt our teaching to suit their needs. This is true whatever the age or proficiency level of our learners.

In this session we will consider what classroom teachers need to look out for, how we can evaluate cognitive strengths and areas of weakness, and what we can do to help them develop more effective learning techniques, especially in terms of memory and phonological awareness.

Promoting international student wellbeing (
Ruth Hughes)

During this workshop, you will achieve a greater understanding of the nature of human wellbeing and intercultural strengths; learn more about responding to culture shock and stress; and explore strategies to support and motivate young people in new environments. You will learn to recognise some of the signs and symptoms of mental ill-health and gain confidence in responding to warning signals. We will also explore how organisational wellbeing policies and signposting can support staff, before concluding with creating a practical understanding of how to promote positive wellbeing for staff and students in your organisation.

About the trainers

Dr. Anne Margaret Smith has taught English for 25 years in Kenya, Germany, Sweden and the UK. She is also a dyslexia specialist tutor and assessor. She founded ELT well with the intention of bringing together best practice from the two fields of ELT and SpLD support, and now offers materials and training to teachers, as well as specialist teaching to dyslexic learners. She was recently instrumental in setting up the new IATEFL SIG: Inclusive Practices and SEN.

Ruth Hughes
is an educator, consultant, professional speaker and academic in the fields of positive and coaching psychology, culture shock and student wellbeing. Ruth has over 25 years' experience as teacher, safeguarding lead, senior leader and consultant in schools in the UK and abroad.

Key information

This training event is a full day session running from 11:00 to 16:30. Tea, coffee and lunch will be provided. Participants will receive a certificate from English UK at the end of the session.
